The submarine was on its way from Germany via Norway with war material to Japan. According to historical documents, U-864 may have transported approx. 67 tonnes of metallic mercury (in liquid form), stored in steel containers in the keel. Parts of this cargo are spread out on the seabed around the wreckage and lead to leaking of mercury to the water masses surrounding the wreckage. The wreckage and surrounding areas have been investigated several times, and in 2016 a support filling was established to prevent debris from one of the wreckage parts lying on a slope.
